Owen’s Room – Before & After

Here are the before photos for Owen’s room and again the picture isn’t so great.  I guess I took only one of this room so my apologies there aren’t more views.

Now here is this room’s first transformation…the guest room.  I swear I took more photos of this room but for some unknown reason I cannot locate them.  I have looked through various folders etc and no such luck.  I kept this room pretty simple so I suppose it is okay.  As I previously mentioned in Trinity’s post, you will recognize the bed and bedding from her room.  The enamel floral hanging lamp is now located in Trinity’s room and the other one is in mine and Eric’s room.  I have lots of old plates and art work that I also incorporated in the room.  The dresser that can barely be seen (so sorry!) was an Indiana find for $35…I kid you not!  And, as you can see I took the below photos at Christmas time.  You may wonder what the flooring is like since the above photo has carpet.  We did the same wide wood plank flooring in here as well.  Beside the bed on both sides, I had small green rugs.  My window treatment for this room also went ceiling to floor and they were a lovely shade of mocha.  The paint color we chose for this room was also a soft buttery cream from Benjamin Moore.

Now for the final transformation….Owen’s room.  When I found out I was having a boy, I knew exactly how I would be doing his room.  I have always wanted to do an Americana room with a Texas and English twist ever since I worked for an amazing designer in Dallas.  She had a little room in her house that I loved!   When I was pregnant with Trinity, I just knew I was having a boy so I purchased my pulleys and a few other things and then long behold I was told my baby was a girl.  So my little vision had to be put to the side.  With baby number two I was able to put my vision into reality.  Yay!!!!!!

Shortly after Christmas, I began purchasing the items for Owen’s room.  My first find was his rug on Zulily, which reminded me of an old quilt pattern.  Owen’s curtains were also made by my very talented Mima.  She always does the most perfect and amazing job on anything she creates.  I purchased the red and white buffalo check fabric from Ikea and I had enough to have a sham made which you will see on the twin bed.  The dresser/changing table was probably the hardest thing for us to find that went well with the room.  This was a piece my mom got for me in Abilene and at that time it was all red.  She actually brought it to us the day before I went into labor so I didn’t get to make my adjustment to it until we got back home from the hospital.  I left the drawers red and then painted the body in a charcoal chalk paint then sanded it a little so that some of the red would show through.  Eric added casters to a galvanized trash can for Owen’s clothes hamper that can be seen to the right of the dresser/changing table.  The light fixture is a personal design that Eric and I came up with….which was honestly more him.  I just knew I wanted the pulleys to be used in the main light.

Owen’s room has lots of little treasures and so many details that I love.  I designed a few of the art pieces from John Wayne quotes and then mom and I found many things during our little antique hunts at various antique shops, junk shows and estate/garage sales.  Some of my favorite things along the built in desk area (which you can’t see all of it) are the patriotic sheet music, some vintage toys, old baseball mitt, a flag given to Eric from his best friend Tommy whom is a veteran, an old medical stool, some old engineering books and a small Union Jack flag.  On the wall where the twin bed are located, I love the portraits of the men from Texas history, an embroidered piece that has a quote from JFK that isn’t visible, a really cute print of young boys running from an old, red school house that also isn’t visible and antique pennants.  The sconces on this wall are actually made from clamp work lights that we spray painted.  Eric made the pallet wood wall pieces for me to attach the clamp lights to.  Each side table is different…one is an old typewriter desk that I chose to sit an antique stadium seat on and the other side table is made from an old typewriter box that Eric made for me using reclaimed porch posts as the legs.  The headboard on the twin bed is one that my mom had when she was younger.  It is painted the same dark charcoal as the dresser/changing table body.  When I set out on my search for Owen’s twin bedding, I knew I wanted a ticking bed skirt and a ticking bed skirt is what I got.  🙂  The red ticking bed skirt and letter pillow case came from Restoration Hardware.  The duvet cover is from The Company Store while the filler is from Ikea.  The blue quilt is a Stein Mart find while the sheets and grey blanket are from Target.  The blue plaid Euro sham is Pine Cone Hill and the red and blue sham is a Mary Cates and Co. item that I got years ago.  The chevron sham is from Hobby Lobby while the Captain America sham is from Etsy.  The Union Jack throw pillow is an item I found in Bed Bath & Beyond.

The Jenny Lind crib was first used in Trinity’s nursery before Owen inherited it.  I wasn’t too crazy about leaving it white but I also didn’t feel like painting all those grooves and curves so I left it.  🙂  Owen’s denim quilt was a random little find that I came across at H&M.  It fit perfectly and was under $20.  When I got the twin bed skirt, I knew I wanted ticking also on the crib but unfortunately it didn’t come in red so I settled on navy.  I have several changes of sheets for Owen’s crib and my two favorite are the red gingham (shown) and a red star pattern that I bought from Pottery Barn Kids.  My Lady Liberty throw pillow was an Etsy find while the other two shams came from Mary Cates and Co.  The wooden spool book spin rack is a piece Eric created for me from the spool my parents gave me.  The awesome globe was a cool piece my mom bought for Owen’s room and I just love it.  It is so unique!  The Organic Bloom frame holds a super cute art print from Katie Daisy (one of my favorite artists).  The other shaped frames hold photos of mine and Eric’s grandfathers who served in the military.  My Papa (Marine), Truss Farquhar, is on the lower left while my PawPaw (Army), Ben Owen, is at the top.  Eric’s Granddad (Air Force) is on the far right.  I was in search of an eagle of some sort and when I came across the cast iron eagle it was a no brainer.  The old ammunition can was such a cool find and I knew I wanted to put different flags in it and hang from the wall!  I got it from Perspective’s booth at one of the junk/antique shows I attended.  If you aren’t aware of Perspective, I highly suggest them.  They have amazing taste!  The screen print on the upper right was one of my favorite things I purchased at the Country Living Fair in Austin in 2012 mainly because it is a Hatch Show Print.  If you aren’t familiar with Hatch Show Print, go look ’em up!  They’ve been around a very long time.  There’s one thing that cannot be seen by this wall and that is the special shadow box created for Owen from my best friend, Kara.  I love everything about it!  I hope you have enjoyed this little post since this is now one of my very favorite rooms.  🙂  More to come later!

*****All the photos below were taken by the amazing talent of Cristy Cross of Cristy Cross Photography out of Clovis, New Mexico.  She took the below photos for me during Owen’s newborn and family session back in April.  Go check out her recent work HERE.*****
